Univention Corporate Desktop

Central administration and configuration

The administration of the desktop systems is integrated in the central directory service administration and benefits from policy-based configuration. The administrator's settings and defaults are adopted by UCS desktop systems by connecting with the UCS domain in the background. These include:

Automatic installation

The roll out can be completely automated by the profile-based installation of desktop systems. Alongside the CD/DVD-based installation, network installation is also supported, with which systems can be included without user intervention.

Software distribution

Policy-based server distribution allows both the running of security and distribution updates and the subsequent installation and removal of individual applications. Via compilation in policies it is possible to guarantee that systems all receive the same software status. The status of individual hosts can be checked at any time via feedback to a central software status database.

Desktop management

The features of the Linux desktop, both optical (e.g., colours, backgrounds, screensavers) and concerning content (e.g., start menus, desktop icons) and the configuration of many desktop applications can be specified by assigning desktop profiles using Univention Directory Manager .Additional log-in and log-out scripts are available for individual configurations, which administrators can use to perform individual actions. As these features are configured using policies they can be specified globally or for certain user groups.

Remote administration

Univention Corporate Desktop systems can be remote administrated using the web-based Univention Management Console. The installation of software packages, control of running applications and the shutting down of systems can all be performed text-based and thus quickly. The user can share his complete desktop so that the administrator can also access it graphically and assist from any location.
