With the UCS Desktop Virtualization Services (UCS DVS), the software which was previously run on the workstation can be provided and managed virtualized at a central location. The associated consolidation of desktop operating systems and application software on central servers leads to increased efficiency during the roll-out, operation and administration of IT for end users. Availability and security are also improved at the same time.
In addition to the actual functions for operation and provision of virtualized desktops, UCS DVS, in contrast to other solutions, includes a comprehensive integration of the management tools with the identity management functions from Univention Corporate Server (UCS).
This is the prerequisite for the convenient functions for user-specific and end device-specific administration of virtualized desktops included in UCS DVS. This allows assignments between desktop systems and users to be performed directly in the user or client administration.
The integration of UCS DVS with the UCS identity management means that it is also simple to integrate UCS DVS in Microsoft Active Directory environments or administrate it together with UCS Thin Client Services, a manufacturer-independent solution for the management of thin client devices. In this way, UCS DVS supports the construction of thoroughly integrated solutions, from the user administration right up to the thin clients, which cut energy and maintenance costs, even in environments in which Microsoft Windows is predominantly used for administration and desktop operation.
UCS DVS is based on Open Source standard tools from UCS, such as UCS Virtual Machine Manager (UVMM), and expands these with the functions required for the effective administration of virtualized desktops.
UCS DVS also contains the Linux business desktop Univention Corporate Desktop (UCD) and UCS Thin Client Services (UCS TCS). Consequently, a virtualizable desktop is already available at no additional cost with UCD, which can be provided on a thin client device at the users workstation thanks to UCS Thin Client Services. In this respect, UCS DVS is an ideal, comprehensive alternative to conventional, proprietary solutions.
