UCS Desktop Virtualization Services

The management solution for the operation of virtualized desktops

Administration virtualized desktops with UCS DVS

The administration functions of “UCS Desktop Virtualization Services” (UCS DVS) are integrated in the web-based front-end for UCS management – the Univention Management Console. The creation, assignment and configuration of virtualized Windows or Linux desktop systems is thus performed via an easy-to-use user interface.

Creation and configuration of template for virtualized Linux and Windows desktops

Image templates are administrated with the UMC module “DVS templates”. The image templates for virtualized desktops are created and configured from virtual machines available on the server with UCS DVS.

Preparation procedure for creation of templates

The preparation procedure with UCS DVS is comparable to the well-known image-based rollout “sysprep” from Microsoft Windows on hardware. UCS DVS performs all the necessary steps for the preparation of the supported desktop systems automatically.

Editing the templates for virtualized desktops

Metadata such as the name or description of a template can be changed subsequently. In addition, the copying procedure can be adapted for cloning a new, virtualized desktop.

Overview of created virtualized desktops

The overview in UCS DVS shows, among other things, all created virtualized desktop systems, their type, on which physical server they are located and to which users they are assigned. When the templates for virtualized desktops are created, they are automatically integrated in the UCS domain and assigned to a user.

Creation of a virtualized Windows XP system

A new template is created from an existing virtualized Microsoft Windows XP system.

Selecting the instance

The respective virtual instance derived from the template is selected for the creation of the template for the virtualized Windows XP system.

Preparing the instance

The instance must be prepared with the well-known Windows “sysprep” tool for the creation of the template for the respective virtualized Microsoft Windows desktop system. The preparation procedure ensures amongst other things the automatic integration in the UCS domain and the user assignment of the virtualized desktops.

Logging on to the Windows desktop with UCS DVS

UCS DVS includes a native DVS client for Microsoft Windows and Linux, which users can use to log on to a virtualized desktop from a Windows end device. This allows a gradual migration of a DVS environment from native Windows installations to thin clients

Virtualized desktops on thin client end devices

In combination with UCS Thin Client Services (UCS TCS), a solution for the central operation of different thin client devices, users have direct access to their virtualized and assigned desktops when they log on to the thin client.
